World-leading cyber security business nCipher Security, an Entrust Datacard company is seeking talented software engineers to join its ranks in securing some of the world’s most valuable information. Primarily based in central Cambridge near the railway station with additional sites in the UK, the business provides vital, trusted crypto security systems to companies all over the world and is responsible for protecting more than 80% of worldwide payment transactions. Cryptography is the backbone of online and mobile security and our encryption products are used by 19 out of 20 of the world’s largest banks, high profile technology companies and a multitude of well-known companies. An Agile approach is used in product development with engineers working in small teams of six to eight. This allows them to interact, collaborate, respond to change; and they are empowered to make decisions on a daily basis. nCipher Security also prides itself on encouraging and supporting innovation and creativity among its teams and the company is working in a number of exciting and emerging markets.

Key Tasks

  • You will provide strong technology/software engineering leadership in the project
  • You will work with, guide and mentor software engineers in the development team
  • You will contribute to software architecture and produce high-quality software designs, investigating and recommending industry standard and third-party technologies where appropriate
  • Working in the development team, you will iterate your design based on evolving knowledge, ensuring that software design and the software implementation are aligned
  • Working as part of the development team, you will implement components, ensuring the integrity and robustness of the project deliverables
  • Identifying and highlighting technical risks, you will take ownership of technical issues and their resolution
  • You will support Product Management, including attending occasional customer-facing meetings

Technical & Professional Skills


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or other relevant discipline.



  • Recent experience in a lead software engineer role
  • Experience developing software from resource-constrained embedded, through to distributed and scalable systems
  • Internet technologies, protocols and standards
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of design and programming on a variety of platforms and environments including UNIX and Windows based operating systems
  • Significant implementation experience of large projects, including use of multiple development languages (must include C and C++, may include Go, Java or Python)


  • Design and/or implementation experience in the following technology areas:
    • Secure software architecture
    • Web-based Restful technologies
    • Embedded systems
    • Cryptography and associated concepts in IT security, including security APIs such as PKCS#11, Microsoft CryptoAPI and OpenSSL
  • An appreciation of relevant Quality (ISO9000) requirements and processes
  • Experience working in an Agile development team

  • Good communication skills, with the ability to fluently convey complex designs at multiple levels of abstraction to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment and mentor/coach other team members
  • The ability to prioritise, manage your own workload, be flexible, work under pressure and deliver to demanding deadlines

Security Clearance

Candidates will be asked to achieve baseline security level clearance (BPSS), provide proof of identity, eligibility to work in the UK and employment/education history for the past 3 years.
