Network Security Engineer

Based in Cambridge (CB1 2GA)

Primary Purpose of the Role:


Build, maintenance, monitoring and protection of the core network and security infrastructure critical to the running of the business.


Principal Relationships:

  • Working as part of the Global IT/IS team to deliver business as usual support
  • Work within project teams assisting in the delivery of new IT projects and transition into BAU
  • Build relationships with internal end-users, stake holders and management across global regions
  • Work with business working groups and departments such as Engineering, Professional Services, Sales, Support and many others to gather their requirements and meet their needs

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Aid in the design, build, security and maintenance of the internal and remote office infrastructures.
  • Assessing security infrastructure, network and systems design to ensure system/network security
  • Responsible for the incidents, requests & changes relating to the internal business network routers/switches/firewalls/security appliances
  • Perform security vulnerability monitoring, risk assessment and remediation activities
  • Contribute towards the management of any cyber security incidents
  • Contribute towards ensuring that infrastructure services are available within the defined SLA
  • Contribute towards ensuring the infrastructure has capacity to meet current and planned future needs
  • Deliver monthly management reports on network and security health, performance and risks
  • Creation and documentation of best practice working methods and processes for use within the IT team and for the business
  • Liaising with external and internal suppliers for both the provision and repair of infrastructure services
  • Participate in Incident, Major Incident and Problem Management processes
  • Assist in the development of team members through knowledge sharing & providing guidance and mentoring
  • Translate business needs in to working solutions.
  • Contribute to the technical roadmap of IT infrastructure

Skills required:
  • Practical experience and able to demonstrate subject matter expertise in relation to switches, routers, firewalls (Cisco technology landscape)
  • Protocol level knowledge, vPC, OSPF, IP, TCP/IP, MPLS and packet level troubleshooting
  • Practical experience and demonstrate subject matter expertise in relation to cyber security components and principles
  • Experience in the creation of quality technical documentation such as high and low-level designs
  • Experience in change control both in terms of implementation and documentation
  • Evidence of self-study and commitment to long-term learning
  • Able to pick up knowledge and concepts effectively through on the job training
  • Listens carefully to instruction and ensures guidance is followed
  • Good relationship building skills, able to communicate with end-users and colleagues alike


  • A minimum of 3 years in a similar network and security role
  • Cisco Switch Technology
  • Cisco ASA Firewall technologies
  • Web Proxy technologies (Cisco WSA)
  • Experience of SIEM tools (such as Splunk)
  • Documentation creation
  • Ability to work within a team & individually
  • Experience of implementing and maintaining ISO27001
  • Cisco Unified Communications Manager
  • Wintel, Active Directory, Exchange, Virtualisation and Netapp technologies
  • Unix/Linux Support
  • Knowledge of Disaster Recovery
  • Experience of working remotely from the wider team & end users
